It is hard to believe the year 2020 is upon us! As we ring in the new year, we make commitments, set goals, and of course, seek out the latest design trends.
Last year, Neocon celebrated its 51st anniversary, and oh boy was it was soaring with fabulous trends. I visited Neocon in Chicago with Midwest Commercial Interiors and experienced the latest launch on furniture, textiles, and finishes that will hit the market this year. These are the upcoming commercial trends that we exclusively handpicked trends for 2020.
Natural Materials
Raw, imperfect natural materials continue to be a favorite for 2020. This trend has skyrocketed to the top of our list. We love the use of warm woods, such as white oak and walnut. It will forever be our go-to. This year, we foresee finishes such as the use of fur, leather details, and jute stealing the show. We love the striking veining in genuine marble. Natural stone is timeless, beautiful and the unique patterns add an element of refinement.
Layering
Rightfully so, layering is all the rage this year. Layering adds a finished look and softens a commercial space. Not sure where to start? Try these few ways to incorporate layering in any commercial interior:
Accessories: We like to say accessories are the jewelry of interior design. In an executive area, layer stylish accessories on the executive desk or bookshelves. To create visual interest, play with scale, shapes, and textures.
Styling: The first impression should lure in guests. In a lobby, try layering coffee tables with books, floral arrangements, and the ever-so-trendy bone beads to make the waiting area feel more inviting while guests wait to be seated.
Art: Layer with Art! Art shouldn’t be the company's logo displayed at every turn. Mix it up by adding tasteful art in places that invoke the feelings and aesthetics you want your company and brand to represent.
Lighting: Layer lighting! Begin with general lighting to brighten the overall space, then add in different forms to create variation. Try mood lighting in the dressing room, accent lighting to highlight a display, and wall sconces in the bathrooms for a high end affect.
Wallcoverings: Use wallcoverings and fun textured treatments to create layers. A wood wall boldly printed wallpaper, or 3-dimensional wall covering create eye-catching focal points.
Greenery: We see greenery continuing to add wellness and livability to commercial spaces.Live plant walls will make their debut in more and more spaces.
Details
Design is in the details. We will be seeing thought out and tailored design especially in places with high traffic that will be seen. Lush velvet paired with an iron rod will make its debut.
Wellness
Over recent years, I have had more requests for ping-pong tables, soda machines, and collaborative areas. People want to enjoy where they work, considering they spend more time there than at home. This year we’re predicting an increase in businesses pushing for a better space for their employees. Create a break room for employees with games, places to sit comfortably, and a place to recharge before returning to work.
Flexibility
The number one request we see from clients is their desire for flexibility. New companies and old companies know that they need room to grow. Producing a design that incorporates scalability can give any company the flexibility to grow as they need. we predict moveable workstations will continue to catch on this year and become a staple in the future. If you’re designing an office with that in mind, use fabric pedestals underneath workstations that double as a chair or perching bench for short conversations or team meetings. You can also provide easily movable workstations, such as sit-to-stand desks.
Bold Ceilings
We are obsessed with bold ceilings and want to see more of them in 2020. Fun prints, funky acoustical tiles, edgy metal shapes, and linear wood planks.
Phone Booths
Smaller touch-down conference rooms and downsizing are inevitable as companies continue to grow. Neocon was inundated with phone booths. Nearly every company had its version of one. Whether it has soundproofing, ventilation or even a bed, a few of the concepts we are drooling over are this one-
Elevate your businesses with a place your clients, customers, and employees will enjoy being. We’re gushing over these trends for 2020 and you should be too.
