They say you’ll never have to work a day in your life if you love your job. If you follow any interior designers on Instagram or Pinterest, you probably think designers have a glamorous job. I love being a designer and love all I do, but it’s not just what you see online. It’s rewarding to see the before and after photos for a project, but there’s so much work that goes into each of the spaces we design. Most days are filled with rendering 3D images, putting together presentations, meeting with clients, or researching that PERFECT solution for a client’s issue.
Here’s a glimpse into my day to day at the office:
9:05 AM: Arrive at the office. As most office jobs, the first thing I do is check my emails. To see what’s on the agenda today, I check my calendar and upcoming deadlines. Today, our most pressing project is a commercial office design. I spend several hours creating 3D images and renderings for a meeting with our clients tomorrow.
12:10 PM: After being glued to the screen for hours as I finish renderings, respond to emails, it’s time to head to lunch. Another designer and I have an appointment with a furniture representative. We meet up with the rep at a local favorite eatery, Black Sheep Café in Provo, Utah. Here we enjoy a started of honey lavender fry bread paired with their homemade cactus pear lemonade. We talk about furniture trends and new products while we enjoy our main course of traditional Navajo tacos.
1:09 PM: After lunch we drive back to the office to set up for a meeting with a residential client. We transform the plain conference room table into an actual design presentation with samples of finishes covering every inch. The client enjoys some local pastries while we walk them through each room of their future house.
3:30 PM: After a very successful meeting with our client, we pack up the presentation and I head back to my desk. I spend the next few hours, finishing up and reading through a construction document for a restaurant design we’re about to submit to the city.
5:04 PM: I proof read through the final construction document for the last time and send it to the contractor. Once it’s sent, I check my email inbox one last time that day, organzine the samples on my desk and clock out.
A day in the life of a designer varies from day to day. Some days, I’m in meetings all day working with clients, other days, I’m visiting our sites across Utah County. But it doesn’t matter what I’m doing that day, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
