Is Retro In?

In 2022, the retro style is making a major comeback in interior design. From repurposing dressers, wood paneling, vintage cabinet speakers, and so much more! When talking about styles in interior design we generally don’t talk about what influenced that style. So what makes the 70’s so amazing? Well, I’ll tell you why!

As we know that the 70’s style was full of funky technicolor highlights such as, the use of bright colors, geometric shapes and patterns. Whether you like it or not, the 70’s was a very aesthetically influential decade, being infamous for it’s playfulness and carefree style. The 70’s design style was inspired by back-to-nature movements. In 1973, the oil crisis had happened, majorly influencing the hippie culture on creating a more natural lifestyle. Even though the design of that era was full of bright colors and geometric shapes and patterns. They incorporated a lot of wood and stone into house designs; they would also have more inside plants either hanging from the ceiling or in pots around the house.

The 70’s also had an influence on floor plans compared to previous years. In the 70’s they focused more on open floor plans, creating a flow of free space. This was more commonly seen and used around the living room, kitchen, and dining room area. This idea has been influential around the design world. We now see houses having open floor plans throughout their home, creating that flow of free space.

“As much as today’s fashion comes from a trend of smooth minimalism, the 70’s came out of the sleek 50’s and the modernism of the 60’s spiced up with high-tech futurism and psychedelic excess, all of which later made a platform of punk.” - Petra Bjelica.

Overall, we give no to little credit to the 70’s design area for creating amazing and unique design ideas. Because without an old trend we wouldn’t be able to create a new one.
